While exploring the south, I happened upon a swamp with about fifteen crypts. That's more iron than can fit in a longboat, so I left a portal and a base behind.
The Ironmire is a stinky and dangerous place. But is has some perks. Right outside of the base lies a Surtling spawner for when you need to stock up on Cores n' Coal.

The base has a smelter and kiln in case you need to process some iron here. It's a short, though squishy walk to the shore for when you need to load up the boat.
A bonfire marks the way to the loading area.
The cabin is small but raised up so at least you aren't sleeping in the muck.
